Data Exchange from Revit

Everyone is talking about granular data - with Data Exchange these are just a few clicks away. Data exchanges are most frequently generated from Revit, so let's take a closer look today.

There are two ways to create a Data Exchange from Revit:

Data Exchange via Autodesk Docs

The simplest and recommended method is directly via Autodesk Docs, as long as the following requirements are met:

  • Revit 2023 or newer
  • At least one published 3D view
  • View + Download Permissions

A Data Exchange is always created based on a published 3D view - only the elements visible in this view are transferred, as Data Exchange always represents a subset of data.
Note that the Revit view and phase filters are also taken into account and applied to the Data Exchange.

The Data Exchange is stored in the selected folder on Autodesk Docs - as it is granular data, it has no file size and cannot be downloaded. However, the Data Exchange can be reviewed in the viewer, and of course it can also be loaded and used with other Data Connectors.

Data Exchanges created through Autodesk Docs are automatically updated when a new version of the Revit file is published and includes changes in the relevant view - this way, the shared data always remains up-to-date without having to trigger a new export manually.

Data Exchange with the Revit Data Connector

The Data Connector is a plugin that enables the creation and retrieval of Data Exchanges. Data Connectors are currently available for the following Revit versions: Revit 2023 (as a technical preview in the Autodesk AppStore) and Revit 2024 and 2025 (as public beta in the feedback portal).

With this plugin, a Revit user can create a Data Exchange on Autodesk Docs directly from Revit, using either the current view or additional filters:

Again, the Data Exchange can be reviewed on Autodesk Docs - however it must be updated manually in the Data Connector in case of changes to the Revit model.

In tomorrow's post, we will integrate this Data Exchange into Power BI and analyze it - stay tuned!
