Phases in Revit

Project phases in Revit define the different time periods or construction phases of the project, such as demolition work, renovation or new construction, and present them clearly with the help of phase filters for views and component lists.

However, phases are not only suitable for conversion projects, but also for creating construction phase plans as part of work preparation. Phases are often created for each calendar week so that the weekly plans can then be easily derived from the model.

Phases in Revit

To display a specific time period of the project as a progression in Revit, each element must be assigned a corresponding phase in which the element was created.

The demolition phase can also be defined for elements that are to be demolished and for temporary structures:

Phase properties for views

With this information, it is now possible to define exactly which phases are displayed for each view - and how:

All elements that are modeled in this view are automatically assigned to the active phase (here phase 01).

Project phases - default settings

It is best to specify which and how many phases are to be edited at the start of a project - this allows the elements to be assigned to the correct phase directly during modeling by selecting it in the respective view. Accordingly, the desired views (e.g. floor plan, section, etc.) are duplicated and named in the project browser.

The desired phases are then selected in the Manage - Phases created.

Phase properties for elements

Phase created: If a new element is drawn in the project, it is assigned to the phase of the current view. Existing elements can of course be assigned to a different phase at this point if required.

Phase aborted: wIf an element in Revit canceledthis is also assigned to the phase of the current view. Alternatively, this property can also be set manually.

Phase filter: The phase filter and the graphic overrides are used to define how exactly the elements are displayed depending on the current phase:

Tab Manage - Phases:

Phases for linked models: wf a model with phases is linked to the existing project, phases of the existing project are automatically assigned to the phases of the linked model using the phase names.
In addition, a phase assignment can be carried out manually under the properties of the linked model (phase mapping):

Phases for component lists: Phase-specific component lists track the development of a project and, just like the plan views, can be accessed via the properties Phases and Phase filter be set.

  1. Hello.

Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to find a solution to my problem ...

Do I have to create a separate phase for demolition so that I can export this component to an IFC? Currently we only work with two phases - existing and new/conversion. Components are demolished in the new/conversion phase. Everything works fine in Revit itself. As soon as I export the components to IFC, the canceled components are not included. We have to be able to transfer our models to IFC, as all the specialist trades work with different software and we use openBIM. The AVA in particular must be able to derive the dimensions from the IFC.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Sandra Traufeller

  2. Hello Mrs. Traufeller

When exporting the IFC, you have to select in the settings which phases you want to export, if any have been created.
The default setting only exports the "final state", i.e. without demolition and temporary superstructures.
In my opinion, it also makes sense to have the demolition in a separate IFC.

    Yours sincerely

    1. Hello,

Is there a suitable solution for this in the meantime? I am facing the same problem that I cannot export my demolition as an IFC.
I have a 3D view in which only the demolition is visible. However, with the setting "Export only elements visible in the view" I get an empty IFC.

My project is also divided into only 2 phases. Phase 0 and Phase 1.
Phase 1 includes all new build properties. In phase 0, the existing properties.
The dismantling to "Phase created" phase 0 and "Phase canceled" phase 1

My 3D view is set like this: Phase: Phase 1; Phase filter: Cancel
This means that only the termination is displayed.

But I can't export this termination model...

Is this really not wanted as described? If there is a default setting, can you teach Revit to export these abort and temporary phases as well?

      Many thanks and best regards

      Carsten S

  3. Hello,

Is it possible to copy phases between two projects? I have a long list of individual phases that are now to be transferred to x specialist models and have not yet found a way to do this. The transfer of project standards only includes "phase settings" (Revit 2020).

I would be grateful for any information.

    Greetings
    Bartek J.
